{"id":274,"date":"2019-03-28T08:49:07","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T08:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everythingconnected.idnet.net\/?p=274"},"modified":"2021-03-10T18:19:40","modified_gmt":"2021-03-10T18:19:40","slug":"what-happens-to-eu-domains-after-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.idnet.com\/blog\/2019\/03\/28\/what-happens-to-eu-domains-after-brexit\/","title":{"rendered":"What happens to .eu domains after Brexit?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are a\nUK based individual, business or organisation with a .eu domain, the UK\u2019s\nwithdrawal from the EU means you will no longer be eligible to use it after\nBrexit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deal or no\ndeal, all UK-registered .EU domains will be revoked post-Brexit unless you reside\nin the EU or have part of your business operating from within the EU and can\nlegitimately transfer the registration to your European branch or compliant\naddress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How long you\nhave to sort things out depends on whether a deal can be negotiated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EURid (the\nEuropean registry manager of .eu domain names) has provided <a href=\"https:\/\/eurid.eu\/en\/register-a-eu-domain\/brexit-notice\/\">information<\/a> about what\nwill happen to those .eu domain names which are currently owned by UK\nregistrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their <a href=\"https:\/\/eurid.eu\/en\/register-a-eu-domain\/brexit-notice\/\">notice<\/a> provides\ndetails of the action plans for .eu domains following the UK\u2019s departure:\neither on 30 March 2019 (at time of writing) in the event of \u2018no deal\u2019, or on\n31 December 2020 if an agreement on the terms of the withdrawal is reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New Registrations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>From the relevant exit date (either 30 March 2019, or 1 January\n     2021), new applications to register .eu domain names by applicants from\n     the UK will be rejected.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Existing Registrations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Existing UK holders of .eu domain names will be notified of their\n     non-compliance with the EU regulatory framework, both seven days before\n     (on 23 March 2019, or 23 December 2020) and on the applicable exit day.\n     However, they will be given an opportunity to demonstrate compliance for a\n     further two months (up until and including 29 May 2019, or 1 March 2021)\n     (the <strong>Compliance Deadline<\/strong>). During such time, domain names will\n     remain active (although will not be automatically renewed) and the\n     registrant may make certain changes, such as updating contact details and\n     importantly, transferring the domain name to a non-UK, EU based individual\n     or organisation. If a registrant cannot demonstrate compliance by the\n     relevant Compliance Deadline, they will be ineligible to own the .eu\n     domain name and it will be withdrawn (the domain name will no longer\n     function, but will remain on the .eu registry database until the expiry of\n     12 months from exit day, when it will become available for general\n     registration within the EU).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to do next? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you intend\nto keep your .eu domain after Brexit, you should update your contact details\nwith an EU address as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, if\nyou don\u2019t intend to keep your .eu domain post Brexit you should start\nredirecting traffic to a different domain immediately e.g. .com or .co.uk \u2013\nthis will introduce your new web address to users in advance, while also\nminimising any impact on your SEO ranking and online marketing activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your .eu domain registration has\nbeen organised through IDNet and you require any assistance in transferring you\ncan submit a request here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idnet.com\/solutions\/domainregistration.php\">https:\/\/www.idnet.com\/solutions\/domainregistration.php#<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that these plans and dates\nare all subject to future developments in the Brexit process.
